We are currently recruiting for a Manager of Group Benefit Underwriting to join our team in Surrey, BC. The Manager, Group Benefit Underwriting is responsible for the leadership and development of the Underwriting team. In this role, you will work with your team to manage and oversee the day to day interaction with all stakeholders and are responsible for overseeing all aspects of the quotes and renewals.  

Outcomes To be completed within 90 days of hire:
  • Build relationships with all stakeholders (team, insurers, partner advisors, sales team, managers)
  • Systems:
    • Learn the quote and renewal tool and have a clear understanding of processes
    • Have a basic understanding of the administration system particularly as it relates to division/class set up and new business
    • Learn CRM
  • Develop a full understanding of the underwriting and provide suggestions for best practices
  • Develop a full understanding of our products
  • Do an assessment of the qualifications of the team
  • Develop a broad understanding of our model and insurers

  • Leadership
    • Understand and deliver the company values and visions 
    • Provide support and leadership to the underwriting team
    • Collaborate with other departments and provide input on processes and systems
    • In support of business objectives, support business initiatives, system projects and maintenance work
    • Performing duties as required by management 
  • Underwriting
    • Be accountable for effective implementation of and adherence to established business processes, underwriting guidelines and service standards;
    • Using both the art and science of underwriting, being creative and solution based so we have a high sales closing ratio and high retention rate
    • Develop and maintain relationships with Partner Advisors and insurers
    • Review and analyze metrics for caseload/activities, block trends, quality and performance metrics 
    • Assess the financial risk and exposure of our blocks; provide advice and solutions
    • Provide support and expertise to group pricing, sales and products
    • Provide guidance and leadership on contracts/CBA interpretation, complex cases
    • Ensuring proposals and renewal reports are accurate and updated as required
  • Team Management
    • Manage employee training and development, do performance and objective evaluations (quarterly and annually) and recruitment
    • Create a climate that encourages high performance through personal and professional development for the members of your team
    • Assisting the team to ensure SLA’s are met 

Education & Experience
  • 5+ years work experience in group insurance and underwriting
  • University degree an asset
  • GBA and/or CEBS an asset
  • Previous supervisor/management experience an asset
